Landesa: LandWise: A Woman & Land Library
Client: Landesa
Description: Landesa is a U.S.-based non-profit organization with hundreds of employees worldwide. The global headquarters is located in Seattle, Washington, with branch offices in India and China. The organization seeks to help the world’s poorest secure land rights, with the belief that secure land rights can build a better, safer world.
Landesa sought to meet an important need by creating a digital library that will serve as a clearing house for vital legal and non-legal materials and point of collaboration for land practitioners in the field.
The digital library project will provide researchers, attorneys, policy analysts, and the general public with access to primary source and secondary source legal materials from around the world.
The substance of the digital library will be land and family laws that impact women’s access to, and ownership of, land worldwide.
Goals: Create a next-generation database with an HTML5-powered front-end, capable of supporting tens of thousands of records. Must include advanced search mechanisms for data-drilldown. Intuitive design. Fast-loading. Mobile device compatible.
Solutions: Meet with Organizational heads and develop strategic plan. Recommend custom database solution powered by Ruby on Rails and MySQL. Establish three top tasks with large, prominent icons. Build intuitive record administration interfaces with clear paths of action for users to take through the data entry and data searching process.
How Success Was Measured: Analytics were setup on the site to measure user participation worldwide, bounce rates on record search pages, depth of visit and time on site. Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) including share with friends, request for more information and social review submissions are critical to monitoring the project’s usability.
